Blitz Build 2008Employees of Discount Tire Company swang hammers from dawn to dusk to build two homes for low-income working families in Guadalupe the week of March 3, 2008. Funded by Discount Tire Company and the Bruce T. Halle Foundation the two homes were built in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Valley of the Sun and the Mori and Morales Familes. "Building one home is a big project but building two homes in a week shows the community involvement and commitment of Discount Tire Company and the Bruce T. Halle Foundation," said Missie D'Aunoy, Chief Development Officer. "These homes will make a difference for the families and for the town of Guadalupe."

Kaitlyn Mulhollan Awarded ScholarshipKaitlyn Mulhollan, a longtime Valley of the Sun volunteer, was recently recognized as one of the top youth volunteers in Arizona by the 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. The nationwide program honors young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism, and Kaitlyn was selected as Arizona's State Honoree at the high school level. Kaitlyn, a senior in high school, was nominated for the award by Corona del Sol High School in Tempe. As a State Honoree, Kaitlyn will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. this May. In Washington, D.C., Kaitlyn will join State Honorees from across the country for several days of recognition events. Ten of those honorees will be named National Honorees, and will be recognized as the top youth volunteers in the country. With her father, Paige Mulhollan, Kaitlyn has volunteered with Valley of the Sun for many years and helped to build ten houses for needy families. For the past three years, Kaitlyn has served as a team leader, instructing volunteers on site and leading them in construction tasks. Kaitlyn is active both on and off the build site, by swinging a hammer and spreading the word about the mission of Habitat for Humanity. "Kaitlyn is a very dedicated, hard-working young lady who has embraced the mission of Habitat and who took on the responsibilities of a team leader at an early age" said Roger Schwierjohn, President/CEO of Habitat for Humanity, Valley of the Sun. "In spite of work at a job on Friday nights Kaitlyn still gets up early on Saturday mornings to join her father and help build Habitat homes." Congratulations to Kaitlyn!
